Coming January, 2006! Toddlers love to GO! Going is their gift, their license to venture out into the world and their means of retreating to the security of Mom or Dad. With toddlers' desire to go, comes an attraction to other things that go - people, animals, pull toys, tricycles, cars, trains, planes, and the list goes on. In Away We Go! we will explore a unit of music that focuses on things that go, leading your child in an exploration of the world of transportation.

Our transportation adventures are symbolic of the central theme in a toddler's life - the balancing act between independence (going away) and dependence (coming together). We act out this balance in every class. From the toddler's perspective, they run and jump into the arms of grown-ups, then they fly away from them like airplanes. They rush into the circle holding hands, then pull back out and raise their hands in the air all by themselves in the Zoom-e-oh Circle Song . They rock cozily together with you to Scarlatti's Sonata in f minor, L118 , then sit apart from you to roll the ball and sing Keep the Ball A-Rolling (En roulant ma boule). At every turn, the toddler ''Bound Away and Back" phenomenon is respected and embraced.

Transportation naturally relates to music and movement in the toddler's life. The three Lesson Units (five weeks each) demonstrate this by linking music, movement and transportation. In unit one we'll explore the concept of direction (up and down), in unit two we'll explore tempo (fast and slow) and in unit three we'll explore articulation (smooth and bumpy). The sounds that relate to transportation provide great material for the Active Listening and Vocal Play components of the lessons. Away We Go! also explores the musical movement concepts of stop and go and steady beat, and includes activities that heighten awareness of many basic spatial relationships, such as forward/backward, under/over, around/through, up/down, in/out, and on/off.

You will find that some of the Away We Go! songs and chants are familiar, such as Wheels on the Bus and I've Been Workin' on the Railroad. Some are less familiar, such as Silver Moon Boat from China and Hey,Tswana from Botswana. And some, such as the Negus original Riding the Rails, are brand new and were tailor-made for this unit. Other contributors include Rich Manners, who has written for the Kings’ Singers, and the CSO. Several professional artists collaborated in the Arkansas Traveler, harmonica, and vocal tracks.

Away We Go! Music and Movement Story Time features two transporation-related books, one about a train called Shiny Dinah, and the other, Giddy-Up Horsey, about several modes of transportation and how they “giddy-up!”.

Join us for this action-packed adventure!
